When I retired, I knew I needed to stay active and keep moving. After years of playing sport for fun, though, I wasn’t sure what that looked like anymore. I wanted something I’d genuinely enjoy—something that would motivate me to keep showing up.

The reality was, it would have been very easy to stay on the couch, skip exercise, or sleep in on cold mornings after a lifetime of work schedules, deadlines and commitments. A gym held no appeal, and an exercise program on an iPad was far too easy to ignore. What I really needed was a community I could connect with, somewhere I’d feel supported, encouraged and guided by people who genuinely cared.

That’s exactly what I found at The Pilates Klinic.

More than two years and over 200 classes later, I’m still attending two or three times a week because it simply works. Even with a 30-minute drive, I happily make the effort—and I genuinely miss it if I can’t get to class.

I’ve noticed real changes. My core is much stronger, I can lift heavy parcels or a toddler with greater ease, and I recently realised I can get up from a low chair without groaning! My balance has improved too—I can even put my jeans on without wobbling or falling over. I feel more confident in what my body can do, and even some long-standing aches and niggles, like my Achilles pain, have disappeared.

But the biggest difference isn’t just physical—it’s the people.

From the moment I walk through the door, I’m greeted with smiles. The instructors know my name, celebrate my progress, and encourage me to keep improving. Milestones are recognised by both the team and fellow members, and the friendships that develop often continue over coffee after class. It feels like being part of something special.

One of the things I love most is the flexibility. I can fit classes around the rest of my life while still making steady progress. The Pilates Klinic has given me not only better strength and mobility but also a sense of routine, purpose and belonging in retirement.

I’m already looking forward to celebrating my 250th class later this year—and after that, I’ll be aiming for 500 and even 1,000. I never imagined I’d say that when I first walked through the door.
